“Carol’s Journey” (El Viaje de Carol) will be presented Mon., Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in a free, public program at the downtown City Library auditorium. The 103-minute film of 2002, directed by Imanol Uribe, has been a consistent feature at many international cinematic festivals.
The story opens in 1938 when Carol (Claro Lago) travels to Spain with her ailing mother Aurora (Maria Barranco) where their father Robert, an American (Ben Temple), is helping to fight Franco’s military regime near Madrid. They go to her mother’s hometown where her grandfather, whom the young girl loves, resides and the young girl — assertive and independent in her own right — challenges the socially conservative environment of her transplanted surroundings.
After her mother dies, Carol becomes friends with a young boy (Tomiche played by Juan José Ballesta) and the film’s coming-of-age story becomes increasingly tinged with tragedy and historical fate.
Indeed, Uribo’s direction is a skillful artistic statement that allows the audience to see without benefit of his particular judgment the intense political conflicts against the backdrop of this young couple who sparkle in handling the freshness of a solidly written script. The film is an excellent way to introduce young people to the artistic potentials of international cinema.
